Torn sliding screen doors are usually pet damage, UV degradation, or hurricane debris. Rescreening (replacing just the mesh) is a $145โ$245 professional service or moderate DIY. Full screen door replacement runs $245โ$485. Marine-grade fiberglass mesh lasts 5โ7 years in Florida sun. 772-297-2401.
Screen tears are the second-most-common screen door issue after wheel failure. Florida’s combination of intense UV, pet activity, hurricane debris, and aggressive insect pressure means screens take a beating. Rescreening (replacing just the mesh fabric while keeping the frame) is straightforward and inexpensive. Here’s when to rescreen vs. replace the whole door.
Five causes of torn screen doors (Florida edition)
1. Pet damage
Dogs scratching to get out, cats climbing, both pushing against the screen โ the #1 cause of tears. Pet-resistant heavy-duty screens are available but cost 50โ100% more.
2. UV degradation
Florida UV index 11+ during summer makes standard fiberglass screens brittle within 4โ6 years. Eventually they tear from normal use or wind. UV-stabilized marine-grade screens last 6โ8 years.
3. Hurricane debris impact
Tropical storm debris (branches, palm fronds, debris from neighbors) tears screens during named storms. Sometimes happens to many homes simultaneously. Insurance may cover hurricane-related screen damage.
4. Wind stress from improperly closed doors
A screen door left open in 25+ mph wind can rip from the frame or the mesh can tear from the wind pressure. Common in Florida coastal homes.
5. Mosquito and insect aggression
Florida’s mosquito populations push against screens looking for entry. Over years, the constant pressure plus their leg piercings create micro-holes that grow into tears.
Step-by-step DIY: rescreening a sliding screen door
Tools: spline tool ($8), spline roller, utility knife, replacement screen mesh, spline (rubber cord). Plan 60โ90 minutes.
- Remove the screen door from its track. Lift screen door up to disengage from bottom track. Set flat on a padded work surface.
- Remove old spline. The spline is the rubber cord that holds the mesh in the frame groove. Use a flathead screwdriver to pry up one end, then pull the spline out around all 4 sides.
- Remove old mesh. Lift out the torn screen mesh. Clean any debris from the frame groove.
- Lay new mesh over the frame. Cut the new mesh to size with 2-inch overhang on all sides. Lay flat over the frame.
- Roll spline into the groove. Starting at one corner, use the spline roller to push the new spline into the frame groove. This pulls the mesh tight as you go. Continue all 4 sides.
- Trim excess mesh. With utility knife, trim the mesh just outside the spline groove. Pull the corner spline tight before trimming corners.
- Reinstall the screen door. Engage top of screen in upper track, lower bottom into bottom track. Test sliding.
Rescreening is one of the easier sliding door DIY repairs. If you’ve done one screen, you can do all of yours.
When to call a pro
Consider professional rescreening if:
- Multiple screens need replacement. Bulk rescreening is faster and consistent quality.
- Frame is bent or damaged. Frame work needed before rescreening.
- Pet-resistant heavy-duty mesh upgrade. Pet screens require specific spline and installation technique.
- Custom-sized screen door. Standard rescreening kits may not fit; professional sourcing.
- You’d rather pay $145. Time vs. money โ both reasonable choices.
Why screen doors tear in Florida
Florida is the most aggressive screen door market in the US:
UV destroys standard fiberglass mesh. Florida UV index averaging 11+ during 6 months of the year breaks down fiberglass mesh within 4โ6 years. UV-stabilized “Phifer SunScreen” or “BetterVue” lasts 6โ8 years. Pet-resistant heavy-duty mesh (Phifer Pet Screen) lasts 8โ10 years but costs 2ร standard.
Mosquito pressure is significant. Florida’s mosquito populations push against screens constantly. Over years, this creates micro-perforations that grow into tears. Standard 18ร16 mesh is adequate; “no-see-um” 20ร30 mesh blocks sand fleas common in Florida coastal areas.
Hurricane damage is recurring. Every named storm tears screens from impact and wind. After major storms (Ian 2022, Idalia 2023, Helene 2024), we did hundreds of bulk rescreening jobs. Some insurance policies cover hurricane-related screen damage.
